Online course – Interpretation of routine blood results (dog and cat): CBC, blood smear, biochemistry and electrolytes with 5 clinical cases

Interpretation of routine blood results (dog and cat): CBC, blood smear, biochemistry and electrolytes with 5 clinical cases

This course has specifically been designed to give practitioners the confidence and knowledge to interpret basic blood results. We will address abnormalities in the complete blood count (hematology) and will teach you the skills to evaluate a blood smear (we will focus on normal cell morphology, but also teach you to recognize oxidative and immune mediated damage of red blood cells, toxic changes of white blood cells, how to assess platelet numbers and much more).

Furthermore, we will discuss biochemistry abnormalities. We will not only focus on the common parameters such as kidney values, liver values, total protein, but also discuss how to interpret protein electrophoresis patterns, liver function tests and abnormalities in lipids, lipase/amylase as well as creatinine kinase. In the final part, we will focus on electrolyte abnormalities (Na, Cl, K, P, Mg, Ca). To help you to put the learned information into practice we will furthermore discuss 5 clinical cases. You will learn how to resolve each case using a problem-solving approach that will enable you to manage future cases in a similar fashion.

The total course duration is minimal 10 hours, divided over 4 modules that each consist of different chapters. Each chapter contains a short video of a previously recorded lecture. Furthermore, there are various practice quizzes and you get the chance to work up the 5 clinical cases yourself (you will be asked questions that will help you to analyze each case more critically) before the answer is revealed in the case discussions. You can print off your handouts and can ask questions to the teacher on the online forum.

You will have access to all the video’s during a period of 3 months. After registration, you will have immediate access to the course and you can complete the training at your own pace.
